career guidance:
HELPING MATRICULANTS MAKE THE CORRECT CAREER CHOICES
CHILDREN WITH BETTER EDUCATION MAKE A BETTER COMMUNITY
Bongudunga & kwaPata Secondary School learners
For some choosing a carer appears to be simple. for others it can be a daunting task and frustrating. the frustration could result in a mistake or even loss of interest that affect them for the rest of their lives.
The prospect of finishing school is exciting for most leaners. the thought of being in higher leaning institution bring excitement and anticipation. like any other change, the thought of not being at high school is scary for some matriculants becouse they do not know what the following year has in store for them, but deciding on where and what you would like to study is not as easy as it seems. making the rong study decision could prove very costly both in terms of money and time. some times choosing the rong study course could lead to low self esteem and loss of excitement and determination. therefore it is highly advisable spending your time considering all options.
Many potential students play a guessing when it comes to making study choices. sometimes they stick to what they know or usually see, for example; medicine, law and Bcom Accounting. matriculants often do nto have support system and information required to make the informed decision. most metriculants have to source the information on their own. with the lot of school work to do, this is not an easy task at all. as a result most matriculants set their seils on their friend`s dreams not their own dreams
going to a private higher learning institution is not even an option. with the sky high fees at private higher learning institutions only a selected few can afford studing there. matriculants ned a lot of proper guidance; otherwise they might find themselves not studing the following yearor even settling for courses that may not be suitable for them.
COMMON CHALLENGES AND STUMBLING BLOCKS
Most matriculants choose careers that are mostly potrayed as glamorouse and fulfilling, mostly in terms of salary and life style. they consider the fact that the career might not be suitable for them and that they might not cope with the studies towards that career. studying something that is not suitable for might result in failure and possible exclusion from a unioversity.
sometimes matriculants choose study institution that were chosen by their friends whioch may result in forgetting the reason they are at the higher educational institution as a result one or both might possibly not pass their studies.
Some matriculants choose certain studies becouse they are under pressure from their parents and teachers who tell them to choose a certain path. most students are forced to live in their parent`s shadow and some try to live up the expectations of what the community at large regard as a successful career.
with this in mind the Al-hidaaya da`wa network (ADN) decided to intevene by having a career guidance exebition every year since 2014. the main focus is to create awareness amongst high school students. the student should have enough knowledge to make an informed decision. this gives a student a chance to ask questions they have always wanted to ask about their career
keeping in mind that being in class is very importent for the students. if the students are absent or having a lot of free periods , it makes it harder for some teachers to catch up. with the career guidance and exhibition they get to be absent for half a day per year, give them more days in class. if the institutions came on their own one by one, a lot of days would be wasted
With the career guidance exhibition, Al-hidaaya Da`wa Network is hoping to assist the students aliminating some of the challenges they face when they want to choose a career. these challenges include being stay home with matric, chasing other people`s dream and having less or no faith to persue their own dream.
who feels it knows it? you have every right to choose your career of choice. you are the master of your own destiny, so own it and do not forget to seize the moment and it shall echo for ever.
